Research

Within Forest, Nature and Landscape the following research topics are being dealt with:

1. Forest ecology and management (FORECOMAN)

Forest ecology and managementB. Muys

The central focus in FORECOMAN (prof. dr.ir. Bart MUYS) is the role of forests in sustaining welfare and well-being of the human society through their ecosystem services. This unit contributes to forest conservation, restoration and sustainable management in two different ways. First we aim at developing methods for sustainability assessment of land and forest management. Second, we aim at developing sustainable management systems for specific regions (e.g. tropical and temperate regions) or tree species.

2. Plant ecology, nature conservation & urban green (PLANA)

Plant ecology, nature conservation & urban greenM. Hermy

PLANA (prof. dr. Martin HERMY) has widened its research focus from historical ecological research in deciduous forests (impact of former land use, ancient forest plant species, biodiversity) to a broad range of research topics related to the ecology of plant species of forest habitats, calcareous grasslands, heathlands, small landscapes elements, and more recently, to green roofs,  the use of perennial plant species in urban green element and pollination. This unit hopes to improve forest and nature conservation and the application of urban green to improve the life environment of humans.

3. Landscape analysis and land use (LALUA)

Landscape analysis and land useH. Gulinck

LALUA (prof. dr. ir. Hubert GULINCK) is engaged in the development of methods and applications of landscape analysis and land use planning in outdoor environments. This group has its origin in a spin-off during the years ’80 from a soil science origin and from an earlier ecudation segment “spatial planning”, focussing on new extensions such as landscape design, rural planning and landscape ecology.

4. Land and Information Management (LandInforMan)

Land and Information ManagementJ. Van Orshoven

LandInforMan (prof. dr. ir. Jos VAN ORSHOVEN) was established in 2005 and performs academic research at the interface of agri-environmental processes and applied geographic information science & technology. The rationale is that for the understanding, quantification and prediction of the relationships between environmental performance and agricultural practice on the one hand and between agricultural performance and environmental boundary conditions on the other hand, careful attention needs to be given to the spatio-temporal context and dynamics of the involved physical and socio-economic processes. Another scientific ambition is to contribute to better support of policies and practices in the agri-environmental and related domains.
