In the recent past, at the KU Leuven, there have been several examples of co-operation between archaeological research projects and different disciplines from the natural sciences. To organize these more ad hoc interdisciplinary projects and to raise their visibility and impact, the Centre for Archaeological Sciences (Special Research Fund - Excellence Financing, then Programme Financing) was established. The main goal of the centre is to support archaeological research projects with an extensive and in-depth experience built up in the Faculties of Exact Sciences and Engineering in Leuven, next to expanding existing expertise in archaeological sciences. It acts as a focal point for advanced interdisciplinary archaeological research in “demography and interregional exchange”.
