Archaeometry Group

[Contact]    [Researchers]    [Current Research Programmes]    [Links]

Welcome to the web page of the archaeometry research group of Patrick Degryse!

Our group is active within the section Geology of the department Earth and Environmental Sciences of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.

We are also a core partner in the Centre for Archaeological Sciences and participate in the Leuven Sustainable Earth Research Centre (LSUE) of the same university.

The main research topics of the group are the use of mineral resources in Antiquity and the organisation and technology of ancient craft production. A special emphasis is put on petrography, mineralogy and (isotope) geochemistry of archaeological artefacts and their raw materials.

Several doctorates in (archaeological) ceramic petrography, clay mineralogy, petrology of natural building stones and marbles, ore geology for ancient metal production, mineralogy and geochemistry of sand resources for glass production and ancient glass geochemistry are in progress.
