Ruth DeFries is a geographer and professor in ecology and sustainable development at Columbia University in New York. Her work has given profound insight in how humans change the land and how this affects climate, biodiversity en human prosperity. Her analyses of socio-economic systems are an authoritative guideline for policy and society. Recently, Ruth DeFries wrote the popular science book: “The Big Ratchet: How Humanity Thrives in the Face of Natural Crisis”.
